Megan's 5th Birthday
Today was Megan's 5th birthday. We decided to have a Fancy Nancy Tea Party. If you haven't read Fancy Nancy by Jane O'Connor then you need to. It is about a little girl who thinks accessories makes everything better. Frilly toothpicks makes a sandwich taste better, frilly socks make you play soccer better... well you get the point. Secretly, I just love the books for the illustrations. I also think that there is a little bit of Nancy in me too.
Anyway, back to the party. I wanted to make her day really special so I did go just a little bit overboard. We had a tea part theme. I brought out the best china. Two sets actually. My Old Country English Roses by Royal Dalton and a set of bone china that Megan's great, great grandmother had. It actually has an "M" monogrammed on each plate, saucer, serving piece, and cup. Shhhh, the great, grandparents do not know that we used it. To set the table I used a butter yellow table cloth with white lace napkins as placemats. I served peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches, cream cheese and raspberry jam sandwiches, cheese cubes, fresh fruit, and cheetos (yes, I had to get them in there, I am dealing with a group of 5 year olds). I made cute name tags for each food item and stuck them in with cut off skewers. For the birthday cake I tried making a "topsy-turvy" cake. This was the first time I have made a stacked layer cake with fondant. It turned out OK. Good for a first attempt. I had to get Megan's opinion though. She said that "Oh, mama, it is wonderful! I love it." "Is it fancy enough do you think?" I ask. She replys, "Oh, yes. You are the best mama at cooking." Isn't she the sweetest!
I set up everything the night before Megan's party. When she woke up the next morning she walked into the kitchen before anyone else was up. I heard a gasp and little feet running back to our room. "Mama, the table is beautiful. Definitely fancy!" She was so excited about her party. We had breakfast and then I took her to school. While at school I laid out all of her dress-up dresses on her bed, hats on her cedar chest, and accessories on the little table in her room. I also found my old Caboodle (who remembers wanting one of those in the 80's?). I put some makeup in there for the girls to use for the tea party.
The party was a great success! We had approximately 6 girls and Will. The girls changed clothes before lunch, after lunch, and after eating cake. I think they also sneaked in an extra change while Megan was unwrapping the presents. If you were wondering, "Did any china get broken?" The answer is "No." They were all perfect young ladies. The lunch was devoured and they also enjoyed Megan opening her gifts. In fact one box was filled with packing peanuts. They decided that it was snowing so the packing peanuts were thrown all over the living room. They were crushed, stomped, broken, etc EVERYWHERE! At least Aunt Stephanie was nice enough to clean up the mess!
