Rediscovering Old Joys
I have been rediscovering some of the things that I used to enjoy. Have you noticed that as you grow older that you push to the side some of the things that used to define you as a person? In the past you would enjoy doing these small things daily or even weekly, but as you go off to college or have a child or maybe even change jobs these things are pushed to the side, unnoticed and maybe forgotten forever.
One of the things I have just rediscovered is playing the piano. Did you know that I took lessons for 10 years? Yes, that piano in the living room is mine, not some random item inherited from a relative downsizing. I was pretty good, not professional, but I could play Mozart and Bach. Since Megan has been taking lessons I have found time to revisit some of my music. I find myself laughing when I cannot remember how to play a measure or pause in figuring a series of notes. But overall it is fun and relaxing to be able to play again. I seem to have found a piece of myself that has been lost since I graduated from High School. I also feel a little proud that Megan is doing so well. I never took dancing lessons like she is doing, so to me this is one of the first things that I truly can share with her. Maybe she will decide to continue for several more years. I would like that but we will have to see how things go.
Another thing I have done between Christmas and now was to read. I love to read! I could sit and read an engrossing book until one in the morning. (Yes, that would be the Twlight series!). I have found my self sitting down at the kitchen table, promising that I would only read about 10 minutes before doing housework and then, wham, it is time to get Will from school. Three hours gone in a good book. Not really a bad thing, just amazing that I have the time to sit and read with no little ones coming up to me and begging for attention.
Have you read this entry and something in it is talking to you? Maybe you used to paint or sew, or maybe you would travel someplace new once a week. Whatever you used to do I want to encourage you to go and try to find that small piece of yourself that you have been missing. It is so rewarding to take 10 minutes out of your day to revisit one of your old loves. I was able to do it, so you can too!
