Titanic!
The last nine weeks before Christmas Megan made straight A's. She decided for her special treat that she wanted to go and see the Titanic! Exhibit at Sci-Port in Shreveport, LA. I do not know if I have mentioned what we do for Megan and Will when they get straight A's on their report card. We think they are too young to understand the power of money, so we decided to reward them with a special treat. So far we have been to see a movie, several museums, and eaten at our favorite restaurants. I remember I used to get $5 for every A on my report card. I usually cleaned up! When they get older we probably will go for a monetary reward system, but for now the current system seems to work.
The Titanic! Exhibit was really good. Not as good as the original one, but still great for children. Each of us received our boarding pass, which was an actual person from the original sailing. At the end of the exhibit we were to check the posted boards to see if we survived or died. Three out of four of us survived. Will's person died, which he did not like, so he had to trade with David. David went down with the ship!
Along with enjoying the exhibit we also went through the entire museum. One of the favorite hands-on exhibits was the sand/river bed. Here you build sand bars and see how the river runs around them. There was also a hydraulic exhibit showing how a canal works. David showed both children how the canal works. The quickly got the concept. A model of a Riverboat next to the hydraulic exhibits. You could steer the boat, blow the whistle, and even make the giant paddles spin. Megan and Will had a lot of fun being the captain. The boat quickly became the Titanic and sunk repeatedly! I did happen to mention that the captain goes down with the ship. They did not want to do that so they decided to move on to the next section of the museum.
I have included a few pictures from this summer (the one above where Will is turning valves on the canal and the two below). It was our first trip and we had a blast. Below, Megan is searching for fossils. You get to dust off the fossils with a brush then match them with an exact copy above. Each copy explains about the fossil.
Both Will and Megan had to try the pulley system. I did make them go in order to see which was the easiest to use. It was really funny to watch Will pull his own body weight. He is such a dense (mass) little boy. Megan practically pulled herself up the rope instead of pulling the seat she was sitting on. Funny thing, they weight about 5 lbs difference, Will being the smaller.
Well, that was our trip to see the Titanic! and Sci-Port. Hope that you enjoyed our little antics!
