First Day of Ballet

Megan started ballet at a different dance school this year. She has been with one dance school for the past three years where she has taken pre-ballet and tap. She has always wanted to do ballet and dance in the Nutcracker so this year I signed her up for a different dance school that has pure ballet classes. She was very upset about changing but I did mention that if we kept with the old dance school, then she would be going into tap and jazz and she really didn't want to do tap and jazz. When we registered at the new school they fitted her with new shoes and of course the used a different type of tights with allows you to slip it on or off your foot without taking the tights off. She thought that that was weird and the new shoes hurt. When we got into the car we were in tears about shoes, tights, the Nutcracker, not being able to see her best friend and really the world coming to an end. I started wondering if I should have signed her up for ballet.

The next morning we had more tears over the same fears. I discussed with her why we changed, that 1) she wanted do to ballet, 2) she wants to dance in the Nutcracker and this is the way to go and 3) she would have been taking jazz and tap at the other place. I then told her we have committed for the whole year and would do the recital. If after the year she still does not want to do ballet then we would go back to our old dance school and she could contiune on. She nodded and agreed.
Today was her first day of dance. We went a little early to get her new shoes. She tried them and they felt better than her old ones. Whew... we are off to a good start. She then went into her class and Will and I wanted. When she came out she had that beautiful excited smile that says "This is what I wanted to do, real ballet." She was so excited that she had to tell me everything that went on in class, they learned to curtsy like real ballerinas, gallop, and they pretened to be real butterflys. She then wanted to know if she got to go back to class tomorrow. I said that no, we would have to wait until next Monday. She nodded then practiced the rest of the day. I know that we made the right move. She will really enjoy dancing this year. Maybe we might even try out for the Nutcracker this fall, if they allow 5 year olds to audition. I will just have to ask :)!
