Will's 1st Pinewood Derby
Will is in Cub Scouts this year. He is having a great time going to meetings and making new friends. This year is his first year in the Pinewood Derby. If you are not familiar with the Pinewood Derby it is where each scout is given a pine wood block and some tires. They are to design their car, cut it out (with help because we are definitely not letting Will near electric saws!), and decorate. Will and David sat down one Sunday afternoon and drew out what Will wanted his car to look like. Then David cut it out and it was my turn to help on the sanding and painting of the car.
Thankfully one Sunday afternoon it was warm enough to sit outside on the front porch to sand away.
Will decided he wanted a blue secret agent car. He selected the blue color and then drew on the letter A and gold circles around the wheels.
David took care of the decals and wheel attachment. They had ordered a set of decals and Will wanted them placed in a special way. The decals did not stick very well though. I had to use some Elmer's glue to make sure that they did not fall off.
Now it is raceday! Will was so excited to see the races. He got to race his car three times. One time it jumped the track. He had to re-race it. He really did not mind because "that is what spy cars do, they jump the track." Will even cheered for his friends cars. During the awards ceremony, he noticed everyone getting really cool trophies. He said that he wanted one and I told him, just in case he did not win anything, that he might not get a trophy but he had a really good time racing didn't he? He agreed and we waited for the last trophy to be announced. It was first place for the fastest Cub Scout car and guess what? Will won! You should have seen his face light up when they called his name. He was so proud of his car and trophy.
I asked if he wanted to build another car next year and he said yes. I think David might already have some plans in mind.
